Henry Horan immigrated to America before 1863. He found work at the Smithsonian Institute about 1857 first as a janitor, then in 1858 as a watchman, later a taxidermist and in 1880 became Superintendent at the Smithsonian until his death in 1896. Henry Horan testified before the Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Representatives on Buildings and Grounds about the disastrous fire that occurred on January 24, 1865 where he was found removing pictures in the picture gallery until the ceiling collapsed at which time he was compelled to leave. He later procured a hose and carried it up the back stairs and attempted to put on flames in the lecture room. Henry Horan is my great-great-great grandfather. His daughter was Carrie Horan Conrad, her son Monroe Wallace Conrad, his son James Monroe Conrad, hence my grandfather.
