Tomb of Rabbi Ishac Aboab and his wife Esther, who had died on 1 March 1669.

He was a son of David Aboab and Isabel da Fonseca. Under force of the circumstances his parents were converted. Later they fled to France and finally to Amsterdam. There, their son was educated by Isaac Uziel. At the age of 18 he became rabbi (chacham) of the Community of Beth Israel, on of the three Sephardic communities in Amsterdam. Together with Moses Raphael de Aguilar he departed in 1642 as leaders of a group of Portuguese Jews for Brazil, where they founded a Jewish Community in Pernambuco, since 1624 a Dutch colony. In 1654, when the Dutch rule came to an end, he returned to Amsterdam. He was restored in his former functions. In 1656 he was involved in the excommunication of Spinoza. He was an eloquent man and in 1675 he gave the first sermon in the new synagogue, which is still existing. According to his gravestone he died at the age of 88 years. He was buried the day after his decease. Aboab had published a comment on the Pentateuch and several treatises.
