The son of Zacharias & Elizabeth (Stover) Ziegler, in 1860 he lived with and/or worked for master wheelwright Zach Stover (possibly his father) in North Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in York County November 9, 1862, mustered into federal service at York November 11 as a private with Co. D, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863.

After the war, he married Susan Beard and fathered Christia Z. (b. 01/14/68 - married a Stambaugh), Jacob Beard (b. 09/21/69), Sarah Z. (b. 04/06/70 - married a Baer), and Allen C. (b. 03/23/85). In 1890, he lived in West Manchester Township, York County, and died in West York after a second attack of "apoplexy."
