Born in Maidstone Kent,son of John Thomas & Elizabeth Mary Johnson, probably in the Cavalry Depot.

Enlisted into the 4th Light Dragoons Sept 22nd 1836 aged 15.
Appointed Trumpeter April 1st 1837. Transferred to the 15th Light Dragoons.

On May 28th 1847 embarked for Bengal India.
Transferred tothe 12th Lancers Jan 1st 1854 in Bangalore.

Promoted to Trumpet Major Aug 20th 1854 and embarked on the 'Pollinger' Feb 20th 1855 for the Crimea.

He died in Scutari Hospital on Dec 22nd 1855 and was entitled to the Crimea Medal with Clasp for Sebastopol
His grave and memorial are listed in ' Resting Places of the Brave ' published in 1857.

"Sacred to the memory of Trumpet Major Francis Johnson 12th Royal Lancers who departed this life 22 Decr 1855 in the 35th year of his age.
This stone was erected by the Non Commissioned Officers of the 13th Light Dragoons as a mark of respect"

His brother Thomas George Johnson was in the Crimea with the 13th Light Dragoons and would have been responsible for this monument.

The grave is numbered 68 out of a total of 74 on the right of the burial ground looking from the sea.
