Son of John Bates & Margaret Hodgson
born in Thurman. His father Left the family early (abt.1810) and it is believed his mother stayed with her elderly parents, Mr. & Mrs. George Hodgson Sr., natives of England and of the earliest Thurman settlers, who, perhaps helped raise William, and his brother George. After his Apr. 28, 1829, Troy, NY marriage to Margaret Somerville, William built a frame house and cleared up a farm at the foot of Crane Mountain in Johnsburg ca 1830. He fathered 9 children, of whom sons, George & Arch were unmarried and stayed on the farm for life. Originally buried on his farm, in the orchard, with wife and dau. Ellen J. Several or so years later, his son Thomas Bates purchased the land and founded the Bates Cemetery and he had his parents and baby sister re-interred here.
