Earl was the fourth of eleven children born to C.C. and L.C. Chandler on 17 Sep 1886, while they were living in Alsea, Benton County, Oregon.

In 1901, the Chandler family moved to Modoc County, California. In 1902, Earl went to live with his older sister, Edna, in Orondo, WA. He worked with his sister's husband, Clyde Trapp, in his orchards and on his ferry. Clyde and Edna divorced and Edna went to Spokane. Earl continued to work with Clyde and Clyde married Lena Sonney.

Emma, the younger sister of Lena Sonney, was still a young girl when Earl moved to Orondo. He later claimed that he had to wait for her to grow up, so they could be married.

Earl and Emma were married by a Presbyterian minister in Waterville, Washington, on Christmas Eve 1913. The witnesses were Emma's father, John Sonney, and the minister's wife.

Earl and Emma had seven children: Ranald Perry 1914-1971 (Cecil Millhorn), Morris Earl 1915-1985 (Vi Leonhardt), Vera Ruth 1917-2005 (Bill Whyatt), Doris Irene 1919-1994 (Bud Berg), Fern Marian 1921-2007 (Jim Almquist), Howard Sonney 1922-2002 (Annamae Barber), and Ernest Edwin 1924-1986 (Lila Cozart).

He later owned the ferry and spent 50 years on the Columbia River with it. He also had orchards.

Earl passed away at Deaconess Hospital in Wenatchee, Washington from Hodgkin's Disease on 5 Aug 1956. Earl's funeral was held at the Jones & Jones Funeral Chapel in Wenatchee, Washington, on 8 Aug 1956. Rev. Raymond Pilcher conducted the service. Earl was buried at Evergreen Memorial Park in East Wenatchee, Washington.
