Deputy dies responding to distress call
LANCASTER - A seven-year veteran of the Fairfield County Sheriff's Office died Wednesday while driving to assist a fellow officer in trouble.

Deputy Ethan Collins, 29, was heading west on State Route 188 from Lancaster to Lithopolis when he lost control of his cruiser just east of Beck's Knob Road. The cruiser rolled into a utility pole, crushing the roof and pinning Collins inside.
Collins died at the scene near a cornfield and a silo with an American flag painted on top. Collins is the fourth law enforcement officer in Fairfield County to be killed in the line of duty and the second deputy. He leaves behind his wife, Kylie, a young son and a young daughter.

"Deputy Collins was a good deputy, a good family man," Fairfield County Sheriff Dave Phalen said. "He leaves behind a great family, and we are going to miss him deeply. I know he was proud of his family, and our thoughts and prayers are with them tonight."

T.J. Strawn started with the Fairfield County Sheriff's Office on the same day as Collins in 1998. He remembers Collins as someone who always got others to smile.

"I can't believe it. I'm still in shock. We came on the force at the same time, became jailers at the same time, and went into the patrol division at the same time," Strawn said.

"Ethan didn't have an enemy anywhere. He was always cracking jokes and making us laugh. He was joking out in the parking lot before he went on the call."

Collins took State Route 188, a winding road with rolling hills. He turned on his lights and sirens on his way to help a Lithopolis police officer who was chasing a person believed to be carrying a knife, Phalen said.

Collins lost control of the cruiser as he crested a slight hill and attempted to round a curve in the road. The cruiser crossed into the oncoming lane and went off the left side of the road, just east of Beck's Knob Road.

The cruiser then hit an embankment in front of 2345 Lancaster-Circleville Road (State Route 188) and rolled into a utility pole, which snapped off at the ground.

"The Lithopolis police officer was able to get the situation under control and called off our assistance," Phalen said. "But it was already too late."

Collins graduated from Lancaster High School in 1995 and Hocking College in 1997. He then became a deputy.

John Zishko - now principal of Thomas Ewing Junior High School - was Collins' high school cross country and track coach. He said Collins was a leader.

"He was a varsity athlete, and I could always count on him," Zishko said. "He always helped out with the younger athletes, the freshmen and sophomores, and I could always count on him to lead."

Zishko said he knew Collins remained in contact with his teammates.

"I know he was still close with them," Zishko said. "It is a real shock. I can't believe that he is gone."

"It is really a tragedy. He was responding to a call with lights and sirens on," Lewis said. "It's bad when anyone loses a life on the road, but we feel it even more when it is one of our own."

Officers and deputies went to the accident scene and to the Sheriff's Office to support each other. The Lancaster police department provided traffic control at the crash scene.

"At times like these is when we all try to come together," Lancaster Police Chief Randall Lutz said. "It is going to be a difficult time for the Sheriff's Office. I don't think you ever get over something like this. You just go on."
