He graduated from the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry after attending Virginia Tech. He was Past President of the Roanoke Valley Dental Society and the Piedmont Dental Society. He was a Fellow of the Virginia Dental Association, Past President of the Roanoke Civitan Club and Past Chairman of the Board of the First Church of the Brethren. He practiced dentistry in the Roanoke Valley for 46 years. Bob's career included serving in the U.S. Army for 6 years, his last duty station being Fort Jackson during Vietnam.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Betty Wray Pugh, sons, Robert Lewis Pugh, Jr. M.D., James Christopher Pugh and wife, Sharyn; William T. Pugh and wife, Amy; daughter, Catherine Pugh Emery and husband, Brook, cherished grandchildren, Alex Connor, Austin Robert and Blair Elizabeth Emery, William Hunter and Sydney Anne Pugh and Catherine Louise Pugh. Bob is also survived by a sister, Geneva Pugh Peyton and husband, Henry S. Peyton, Jr., brothers and sisters-in-law, James C. Jr. and Betty Pugh, Colonel George M. and Kimmi Pugh, Franklin and Shirley Pugh and many nieces and nephews.
Prior to the birth of Bob's grandchildren, golf was his favorite past-time, but after his grandchildren came along, he and Betty could be found at all of their games and activities. His grandchildren were the light of his life and he was never happier than when he was with them. They will miss their "Poppy" cheering them on.
A memorial service celebrating Bob's life will be held 4:00 P.M. Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Oakey's South Chapel with Pastor Dava Hensley officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A Celebration of Life reception will commence at 5:30 P.M. at Hidden Valley Country Club. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to First Church of the Brethren, Pay-It-Forward, 2001 Carroll Avenue, Roanoke, VA 24017.
