A military headstone was ordered for him (Contract #July 8, 1887) as a Civil War veteran of service in the 27th New York light Artillery Battery. However he was confused with a C.W. Sherman who served in Co. B, 81st Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry and with Charles W. Sherman, who served in Company A, 33rd Regiment New York Infantry, buried at Woodland Cemetery in the City of Cleveland (see Find A Grave Memorial #142550033). This confusion can probably be attributed to inaccurate W.P.A. veterans' record compilations.
