Grant Ernst Dies; Rites To Be Friday

Private services for Grant W. Ernst of 325 Goodrich Ave., former assistant business manager and advertising director of The Post-Standard, who died last night in the Veterans Administration Hospital, will be held Friday.

The Rev. R. Wayne Archer will officiate at 2 p.m. in the Greenleaf Funeral Home. Burial will be in White Chapel Memory Gardens.

Mr. Ernest suffered a cerebral hemorrhage at his home yesterday morning and was removed to the hospital.

A widely known veteran of World War I and II, Mr. Ernst served as a pilot in the first war and as an intelligence officer with the Ninth Troop Carrier Command in the second.

A graduate of Syracuse University in 1917, he was associated with The Post-Standard for 22 years.

After finishing active duty in January, 1946, with the rank of colonel, he became advertising representative of the War Assets Administration at Watervliet Arsenal, Albany. Later he was appointed employee relations and training officer of the Syracuse regional office of the Veterans Administration.

During World War II Mr. Ernst’s unit took part in the airborne invasions in the European and Mediterranean theaters. As intelligence officer, he had the responsibility of sharing in planning the gigantic airborne operations which helped turn the tide against Germany.

He won seven campaigns stars, the Bronze Star with cluster, the Legion of Merit and the French Croix de Guerre.

His battle stars represent D-Day at Cherbourg, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Holland, the Bastogne, Ardennes and the drop across the Rhine. In those major engagements not one aircraft was shot down by enemy planes.

Mr. Ernest was a past president and honorary member of the Rotary Club of Syracuse and a former trustee of the New York State College of Forestry.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Helen Ernst; a son, Stanton G. Ernst of Baldwinsville; three daughters, Mrs. Alan Douglass, Mrs. William Douglass and Miss Sue Ernst of Syracuse; a brother, Lester Ernst of Victor; and six grandchildren.

Friends may call from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow.
