Stanton Grant Ernst Sr., of Olney, MD, and Inlet, NY, died April 8, 2012, at Friend's House in Sandy Spring, MD. Born June 8, 1922, in Syracuse, the son of Grant William and Helen Hudson Ernst, he graduated from Nottingham High School and the Syracuse University Forestry College. He completed advanced studies in Ornithology at Cornell University. Stan played hockey for Nottingham High School with his boyhood pals, Al and Bill Douglas, who later married Stan's sisters, Helen and Jeanette respectively. Stan served with honor in the Army Air Corps during WWII as a waist gunner in North American B-25 bombers in the South Pacific Theater. On December 23, 1942, he married his high school sweetheart, Alice Kaszubinski of Mattydale, New York.

During the 1950's, Stan worked for the NYS Conservation Department as Manager of the Three Rivers Game Management Area and Director of the Boys Conservation Camp at Tioga Point in Raquette Lake. In 1960, he moved to Maryland become a pioneer in the field of nature interpretation serving for 20 years as Director of Parks for the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission, one of the premier park systems in the United States. Montgomery County boasts more than 400 parks on over 34,000 acres of parkland. He received numerous awards for his contributions to the public park, recreation and conservation movement.

Stan loved the Adirondack Mountains, was an avid falconer, birder, fly fisherman and campfire story teller.

In addition to Alice, Stan is survived by a daughter, Kathleen Johanningsmeier (Alan), Cannon Falls, MN, and two sons, Stan, Jr. (Debbie) Falls Church, VA, and Kenneth (Sherry) Monrovia, MD; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Stan is also survived by his sister, Helen Douglas (Alan), and brother-in-law William Douglas. Stan was preceded in death by his sisters, Jeanette Douglas and Sue Kelly.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Stan will be remembered for many things, but foremost for his dedication to his family, his country, his profession, everything Syracuse University, and fly fishing for Adirondack brook trout.
