Ernest served in the European Theater of Operations during WWII in the US Army. He was a Prisoner of War who escaped and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Following his discharge, he returned to the states, and on June 28, 1946, he married Jessie E. Cook in Colby, KS.

Ernest was an oilfield worker and he and his family made their home in Farmington, NM; Colorado, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas, and Oklahoma.
