Caleb Howard, of Milford, went home to be with the Lord, on Saturday, May 30, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. He was 83 years old. Caleb was born on April 3, 1932 in Mobile, Alabama to the late Rosie Yelder and Caleb Howard, Sr. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Frank, Joseph, and Johnny Howard.

For many years Caleb worked in the trucking industry, driving for Milford Fertilizer Company for over 38 years. After retirement he went into business for himself, working in the garden where he developed life long friendships with many people. He loved that garden and held the secret to growing the biggest, sweetest, fruits and vegetables around. Throughout his life he enjoyed cooking, visiting the sick and shut-ins, and collecting cans. He also liked hunting with his dogs. Most of all, Caleb will be remembered for his strong character and firm but gentle nature, always providing a teaching opportunity for his children and grandchildren.

Caleb was a member of Bethel AME Church until his illness prevented him from attending services. He was also a faithful member of the Male Chorus. In spite of his illness he continued to praise God. Four days before he was called home, he made it known that he was ready to go and be with the Lord.

Caleb is survived by his loving wife, of 42 years, Diana; daughters, Cynthia Bailey (Walter), Odessa, and Domeka Chatman of Milford; sons, James and Kenneth Chatman of Key West, Florida; sister, Hattie Davis; in-laws, Ashley and Agnes Burke; sisters in law, Joan (Sylvester) of Maryland, Deloris (Garfield), and Brenda of Macon, Georgia; 20 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; longtime friends William and Wanda Tiggs; Russell Nixon, and Silas McTeer.

A Funeral Service will take place on Saturday, June 6, 2015, at 11:00 am, at Bethel A.M.E Church, 205 NW 4th Street, Milford, Delaware 19963. Friends may view two hours prior. Burial will follow services at Milford Community Cemetery, Milford.
