James Daniel Duval ‘Dan' Burley

James Daniel Duval "Dan" Burley, 81, died April 2 at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born March 24, 1929, in Amherst County, he was a son of the late Marion Rosser Burley Sr. and the late Sallie Falwell Burley. He was a member of Sardis United Methodist Church, a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War, a member of the V.F.W. Post 9877 in Amherst and retired from the Amherst Post Office as a rural mail carrier.

He is survived by a son, James Dwayne "J. D." Burley and a daughter, Wanda Louise Burley, both of Amherst; the mother of his children, Mattie Cash Burley, of Amherst; three sisters, Russelle B. Pillow, of Altavista, Kathleen B. Meredith, of Lynchburg, and Roberta M. Burley, of Amherst; a brother, Ross Burley and wife, Gladys, of Amherst; a sister-in-law, Jean B. Burley, of Amherst; and a special friend, June Driskill, of Amherst. He was preceded in death by a brother, Gary W. Burley.

A graveside service was conducted April 6 at the Tudor Hall Cemetery, with the Rev. C. Randall Harlow, the Rev. Dr. Michael R. Fitzgerald and the Rev. John Siegle officiating, with military honors by the American Legion Post # 16 of Lynchburg.

The family received friends April 5 at Driskill Funeral Chapel in Amherst, and other times at the home of his sister, Roberta.
