M. Fred Kaelin, 82, Wathena, died Saturday, March 6 at his home. Mr. Kaelin was born in Wathena, the son of Oscar and Matilda Boeh Kaelin. He was a lifelong resident of Wathena. He owned and operated the Kaelin Market and Sporting Goods Store in Wathena for 45 years, retiring in 1992.

He was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, bowling and was excellent at trapshooting, being a member of the Sports Afield All American Trap Team for eight years. He was also a member of the Kansas City Trapshooting Association, Smithville, Missouri; a member of the Amateur National Trapshooting Association; and a member of the Kansas Trapshooting Hall of Fame.

Mr. Kaelin was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the 88th Recon. Squadron 8th Armored Division in Europe, attaining rank of 1st Sergeant. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 161, Wathena; the V.F.W. Post No. 5531, Wathena; the St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Louis Vertin Knights of Columbus Council, all of Wathena.

He married Ruth Nold on August 22, 1942, in St. Jo. She survives of the home.

Mr. Kaelin was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Frieda Rice, Josephine Kaelin, and Kathleen Kaelin; and a brother, Lamont Kaelin.

Additional survivors include three brothers, Louis Kaelin, Raytown, Missouri, Anthony Kaelin, St. Joseph, and Kenneth Kaelin, Wathena; two sisters, Esther Shuster, Wathena, and Lucille Lipira, St. Joseph; and numerous nieces and nephews.
