He has been referred to as greatest racing motorcyclist the world has ever known.
His racing career began in 1901. At the time of his death, 12 years later, he had achieved 900 victories racing mostly on wooden velodromes. He raced for Indian Motorcycles until 1911. In 1911 he began racing for Excelsior Motorcycles.
He set many speed records for his era. The Federation of American Motorcyclist list him as holding every speed record from 1 to 100 miles. He set the one kilometer speed record of 96 miles per hour.
Over his career he was injured many times. He suffered multiple fractures to his left leg, fractured his forearm, had internal injuries, injuries to his head, as well as cuts bruises and burns. He died from injuries received in a race in Los Angeles on March 12, 1912 while riding for Excelsior Motorcycles. He suffered a broken leg which did not heal. He died following complications of surgery on his leg.
He is a member of the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame and the AMA Motorcycle Musuem Hall of Fame. He was one of the first riders to be sponsored by a motorcycle manufacturer.Incident at LA 1912, heavy injuries, after operation 1913 dies at his home
