Olaf skipped first grade and spent the next 16 years in school with older brother Oscar. They both graduated from Luther College in 1925, Olaf in Physics. He earned his M.S. in Physics from the University of Pittsburgh and his Ph.D. in 1933 from the University of Wisconsin. From 1927-1940, he taught at Luther, Knox, Wisconsin, and Northwestern University. Starting in 1940, he taught at Pacific Lutheran, eventually becoming the Chair. In 1944, he worked on the Manhattan Project for the war.

Olaf was active in church and civic affairs also. He met his wife Catherine at Knox College.
