Sivert's parents moved from Norway to Minnesota.
Sivert studied at Luther Academy (where he met Martha Wangen) and the University of Minnesota (graduated 1898). Sivert and Martha married and started their family in Sioux Falls, SD, where Sivert worked at the Lutheran Normal School (for 20 years) and the Miller School District (as Superintendent). Then he spent the next 10 years as a high school principal in Fertile, MN. Their children all went on to contribute to society, some as pastors, teachers, and professors.

Martha died 26 years before Sivert. Sivert spent his last years writing a 150 page book about the hundreds of Jordahl descendants from his great grandparents Ole and Brita Jordahl. His daughter Anna and daughter-in-law Hildegarde helped. Most of those profiled in the book are now connected on Find a Grave. The book also includes stories of these pioneers as they moved from Norway to Minnesota to other states, such as Iowa, North and South Dakota, and Washington.
