Erval was born 'Erval Lola Unger' in Morgan County, West Virginia, to Benson Warren Unger (1870-1952) and Ivy (Riser) Unger (1879 - 20 Apr 1899). Ivy died of Measles at the age of 20 years. Benson and Ivy's son, Dewey W. Unger (1898-1963) is #71311398.

In the 1900 U.S. Census, Erval and her brother, Dewey, were living in Timber Ridge, Morgan County, West Virginia, with their father. Erval married at the age of 17 as 'Erval Lola Unger Hawvermale' and had the consent of her mother. Erval is #140649853.

Cary Gay was the informant on Ruth's death certificate. He is called her son-in-law.

Ruth wrote her will on 19 May 1930. She mentions one of her sisters, Mrs. Thamer W. Taylor, of Terra Alta, WV. She also mentions a nephew, Lloyd Elsey. The residue of her estate was to go to Erval Gay and her husband, C.I. Gay. No relationship to them is mentioned. C.I. was named executor of Ruth’s will. Ruth’s will was probated on 4 Sept 1930.
