About 1915, his family moved to Scottsville Virginia, where Sam worked as a farmer for a couple of years before going into the US Army, and serving overseas in Germany during WWI.
After the war, Sam moved to Detroit, Michigan in pursuit of employment. Once he felt that he had established himself in Detroit, Sam traveled to Virginia in 1924 to marry his pre-war sweetheart, Iowa 'Sarah' Smith. They married in Albemarle County, Virginia and returned to Detroit to make their home.
Sam and Sarah had three sons before Sam was stricken with tuberculosis in the early 40's. He spent much of the next few years in TB treatment centers in Arizona and Wisconsin, but sadly the treatment was unsuccessful. Sam passed away in 1947.
