Robert L. Fillbright, 28, and Gordon W. Chambers, jr., 27, both of Springfield, were killed about 7:55 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25, 1955, when they rented a single engine Cessna 180 plane and crashed in a cornfield on the Leuker farm, one mile north of Mt. Olive. The men rented the four passenger plane from the Capitol Aviation Inc., and took off from Capital airport at 6:55 a.m. for New Orleans, La., to spend the weekend. The first report of the downed plane came at 8 a.m. The weather was reported foggy.

Mr. Fillbright was born Oct. 21, 1926, in Petersburg, and had resided in Springfield for 20 years. A former Illinois State Journal carrier, he entered the navy Nov. 14, 1944, receiving his basic training at Great Lakes, and amphibious training in Florida. He was a member of amphibious scouts, secret service. He was sent overseas in June, 1945, and drove in a truck convoy from Calcutta, India to China. Mr. Fillbright received several battle stars and China-Burma-India campaign ribbons. He attended Lanphier high school and before entering service was employed by Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co.

Surviving are his wife, the former Patricia Brown; his mother, Mrs. Thelma Fillbright, and a sister, Miss Eileen, both of Springfield. Funeral services at St. Agnes church. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. - IL State Journal, Springfield, IL, 2-26-1955
