Carl Frederick "Fred" Ginn, 94, died in Klamath Falls, Ore., June 9, 2014. Private cremation will be at Eternal Hills Memorial Gardens. At his request, there will be no public service. Fred was born Aug. 31, 1919, in Birmingham, Ala., to Carl Leonard and Margia Smith Ginn. At age 17, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and helped build Sunset Bay State Park near Coos Bay, Ore. On June 12, 1940, Fred joined the U.S. Navy, serving for 26 years. He retired Aug. 11, 1966, in Alameda, Calif. He served on the battleship Texas, the Arizona, the Hornet, and the Saratoga. While serving on the Hornet, he assisted in arming the bombs for the planes used for Doolittle's famous raid. In addition, he served in Torpedo 8 during the battle of Midway. At the end of the Korean Conflict, his squadron flew the peace delegates to Korea. A highlight for him during his military career was flying on the Carolina Mars, a large seaplane. On Nov. 14, 1953, Fred married Marjorie Ann Rego. They were married nearly 61 years and had one daughter Sharon Ginn Bradford.The family lived in Hawaii, California, and Alaska, and, while living on Kodiak Island, experienced the Alaskan 9.2 earthquake and tsunami. Following his military retirement, Fred attained an AA degree in forestry and in 1968, began a second career working for Weyerhaeuser Lumber Co., retiring at age 62 in 1981. Fred was a member of the Fleet Reserve, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and American Legion. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking and spending time with his family, especially his granddaughters. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and James Bradford; granddaughter, Gillian Bradford; granddaughter and husband, Whitney and Aaron Worcester; sister-in-law and husband, Kathleen and Michael Edwards; numerous nieces and nephews; and close family friends, Gaila, Gordon, and Caitlin Lochrie and Megan, Ryan, Miles and Macy Dean. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Orion, Homer, Esmond and Gerald Ginn and sisters, Leona Taylor, Ophelia Kimball and Paula Thorpe.
