Suggested edit: This is my Uncle Art. I know the stone says "CracrOft" but it is not correct. His surname is "CracrAft". I tried for a few years to have the stone corrected but kept hitting walls because I didn't know who to contact. At any rate, could you add in the bio "alternate spelling Cracraft"? He gave his life. MOTHER GETS SON'S METAL
Mrs. Marie Sorensen, 365 W. 33rd South street, Wednesday received from the navy department the order of the purple heart, on behalf of her son, Fire Controlman First Class Arthur LeRoy Cracraft, 27, U.S.N. who was killed in
action at Midway June 6, 1942.

Controman Cracraft was first reported missing in action. Later his mother received a navy department telegram informing her he had been killed.

He enlisted in the navy October 11, 1941, and completed recruit training at San Diego, Cal. before going overseas in November of that year. He was a graduate of South High School.

Controlman Cracraft was born in 1917 in Salt Lake City. Besides his mother and stepfather, he is survived by four brothers, Francis, Don, Alvin, and Elmo Cracraft, all members of the nations armed forces.

FIVE BROTHERS ARE IN SERVICE

SALT LAKE CITY, July 17 (AP)
Elmo L. Cracraft, 20, is the latest of five brothers to enlist in the nations armed forces.

He signed up for service in the U.S. navy yesterday, two days after a brother, Arthur Cracraft, fire controlman, third class, was reported missing in action by the navy.

Elmo is a son of Mrs. Henry F. Sorenson. Another brother, Alvin, is an electrician's mate, third class, in the navy, and other brothers, Francis and Don, are in the army as private and sergeant, respectively.

Arthur served on the USS Hammann with his brother Alvin beginning December 1940. In December 1941 they are both still on the Hammann, but in April 1942 only Arthur is listed on the roster.

Paragraph 9. "The underwater explosion apparently killed a large number of men in the water and injured about eighty five more of whom twenty six died on board U.S.S. Benham enroute to Pearl Harbor. Of a total of 13 officers and 228 men on board, two officers were known dead and seven missing, twenty five men were known dead and forty seven missing."

Arthur was one of the missing and was later presumed dead.
