The son of Benjamin & Nancy Ann (Fink) Benedict, in 1860 he was a farmer living with his family in Pequea Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 8" tall and had brown hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster October 4, 1861, as a private with Co. G, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer February 12, 1864, at Chattanooga, Tennessee, and honorably discharged with his company July 12, 1865.

He married Mary McLaughlin January 3, 1867, and fathered George Washington (b. 02/10/67), Ida Elnora (b. 07/07/69, d. <1880), Benjamin Franklin (b. 02/17/71), Barbara Alice (b. 05/14/76 - married Jacob B. Yoder), Kattia Cora (b. 02/13/78), Addison Henry (b. 09/10/79), John Park (b. 07/05/81), Walter Christian (b. 07/18/83), Emma Frances (b. 06/05/85), Elva Jennie (b. 08/15/86), and Park Harrison (b. 09/28/88). By 1910, he resided in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County, but died in Lancaster from "gastritis with chronic cystits" with "acute dilitation of heart" as a contributing factor.
