Jacob (Jake) was born to Peter and Anna Cornelia (DeHolland) DeBruyne in Schoondyke in the Netherlands. He left Holland and arrived in this country in 1921, and in 1922 he married Dora Mae Armstrong. They had children - Doris, Helen, Shirley, Carol Sue, and Bernard.
In 1930 they were living in a rented home on W. Grant Street in Plainwell, Michigan, and Jake worked at the local paper mill. By 1940 they had moved to ME Church Street in Trowbridge, Allegan Co. MI. Jacob continued working at the paper mill as a machine hand.
