She was born in Lumberton on March 13, 1911, the daughter of the late Wade & Emily Wishart.
A member of the Chestnut Street Methodist Church since 1922, she graduated from Lumberton High School in 1927. She attended the Women's college of Greensboro, which is now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
From 1938 to 1940, she worked at Fort Bragg in the office of the Contracting Quartermaster. She worked at the Scottish Bank of Lumberton for two years before working as secretary to Young Allen, the Superintendent of Schools of Robeson County, from 1945 until her retirement in 1973.
In the 1970's, she was a member of the Lumberton Garden Club.
She was preceded in death by a brother, James Wishart.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Norwood H. Merritt.
A graveside service will be at 2:30 at Meadowbrook Cemetery, the Revs. Stanley Smith Jr. and Joe K. Bounds officiating.
There will be no formal visitation.
The family requests that memorials be made to the donor's favorite charity.
