Leila R. Owens (Bradbury), 91, a well-nown Lodi resident since 1927, died Thursday night in a local hospital after a brief illness.
She was born in Leon, Wis., and was raised in Baraboo, Wis., where she attended school. She graduated from Bethel Academy in Bethel, Wis. She came to Oakland with her parents in 1906, shortly after the earthquake. Her father, W.C. Bradbury, was a sone mason an worked for some years in the San Francisco area repairing the damage of the earthquake. Mrs. Owens went to Loma Linda and entered the nursing school in 1909. She was in Loma Linda University's first graduating class.
She worked as a nurse in many areas of Northern California including Ukiah, Monterey and later Fresno. SHe married Raymond L. Owens in May of 1918 at Turlock.
He did his pre-medical school at Pacific Union College and then on to Loma Linda University for medical training. After graduating from medical school, Dr Owens did intern work at Fresno. In 1927, the family moved to Lodi, where Dr. Owens practiced for many years. He died in 1956.
Mrs. Owens was an active member of the English Oaks Seventh-day Adventist Church and did many hours of welfare work for the Dorcas society of the church. She knitted many hundreds of bandages for the lepers of Africa.
She is survived by three sons; one daughter; three sisters, Ellen Balzari, Bernice Bradbury and Doris Tunnell; eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and may nieced and nephews.
