Charles Kirchen, Charter Member of Band, Is Dead
Charles Kirchen, 78, of 1335 So 8th Street, last surviving charter member of the Manitowoc Marine band and local musicians union, died Sunday morning at the Holy Family hospital a short time after he was stricken with a heart attack at the St. Boniface Catholic church.
Mr. Kirchen attended the 7:30 a.m. mass at the church, and was ill in the midst of the service.
Funeral services will be held at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Pfeffer funeral home and at 9 o'clock at the St. Boniface church, the Rev. Alfred Pritzl officiating.
Burial will be in Calvary cemetery.
The Manitowoc Marine band will attend the funeral in a body.
Mr. Kirchen was born in Germantown, Wis., in 1871 and came to Maitowoc in 1898.
Shortly after when the Marine band was organized he enrolled as a charter member. In the early days he played the cornet but later switched to the saxophone. He was also an accomplished violinist and played with dance orchestras for many years.
In a ceremony at Sliver Lake in 1949, Mr.Kirchen was honored and presented a medal to his son, Lester, who completed 25 year membership in the band. Another son, Arthur and a grandson, Arthur Jr., are also in the band.
Mr. Kirchen was a veteran employe of the Aluminum Goods company, retiring last August.
In addition to his membership in the band, for a span of 52 years, he was a charter member of the
musicians local No. 193, the Eagles, and the Freier Saengerbund.
In 1899 Mr. Kirchen married Miss Emma Bruns. She died in 1945.
Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Fred Krohn of this city; four sons,Charles Jr., Arthur Sr., Lester and Raymond; two brothers, J. P. Kirchen of An_____, Iowa, and John of Dubuque, Iowa; two sisters, Miss Angeline of Cascade, Iowa, and Mrs. Louis Breitback of Dubuque, 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 o'clock this evening, where the rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.. Tuesday.
