Fort Ashby, WV- Harold Hiskel Hershberger, 72, of Fort Ashby, died Saturday, June 21, 2014 at the Winchester Medical Center. Born July 21, 1941 in Green Spring, WV, he was the son of the late Cecil Lantz Hershberger and Blanche Virginia (Broome) Hershberger. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Violet Pyle, Margaret Baldwin, Charlotte Logsdon, and Cecil P. Hershberger. Harold was a graduate of Fort Ashby High School, Class of 1959. He then entered the U.S. Air Force, serving from 1959-1963. He retired with 40 years of service at Westvaco. Mr. Hershberger was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Patterson Creek. Over the years, he was very active with the Frankfort High School Athletic Boosters Association. In his spare time, Harold enjoyed sports. He was a devoted fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Washington Redskins. Survivors include his loving wife of 52 years, Norma (Allen) Hershberger; two children, Jodi Lynn Bettencourt, and husband Chris, Bethesda, MD, and Andrew Hiskel Hershberger, and wife Misty, Fort Ashby, WV; five grandchildren, Kayla Wolfe, Shelby and Casey Bettencourt, and Hannah and Hailey Hershberger; one great, grandson, Jackson Lease; four sisters, Elma Allen, Sally Hayes, and husband Tip, Madge Bradfield, and Cathy Batchelor; and, several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, Inc., Route 28, Fort Ashby, on Tuesday from 1-4 PM and 6-9 PM. The funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday at 11 AM in St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Patterson Creek. The Rev. Joyce Anderson will officiate, assisted by Rev. Dr. Thomas Gulbronson and Kevin Evans. Interment will be in Fort Ashby Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by Post #13 Veterans Honor Guard. Serving as pallbearers will be Andy Hershberger, Chris Bettencourt, Jim Allen, Daryl Fazenbaker, Gary Logsdon, and Don Tephabock. Honorary pallbearers will be Warren Ritchie, Bill Price, Tim Beverlin, John Tipping, Kenny Harper, and Glen Pyles.
