Violet Irene Pyle, 94, of Route 1, Ridgeley, went peacefully to her heavenly home Sunday, April 13, 2008, at the WMHS - Memorial Campus.

Born Feb. 16, 1914, in the Town of Patterson Creek, she was the daughter of the late Cecil Lantz Hershberger and Susie Ellen (Logsdon) Hershberger. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Edward Eugene Chaney and her second husband, Glenn Wilson Pyle; an infant brother, Vincent Eugene Hershberger, Patterson Creek; a sister, Margaret (Hershberger) Baldwin; a brother, Cecil Page "Bub" Hershberger, both of Fort Ashby; and a stepsister, Charlotte Logsdon, RFD, Ridgeley.

Mrs. Pyle was a homemaker and a Protestant by faith. She had been a Sunday school teacher and a previous member of St. Paul's Methodist Church, Patterson Creek. She later attended Assembly of God Churches.

Besides her family, Violet had two special loves in her life, namely her flowers and birds. She had a "green thumb" that could make a dead stick grow. She fed and watched her birds and worked word puzzles in her later years. Her memory and wit was marveled by all who knew her.

She is survived by two daughters, Anota Eileen (Chaney) Hitchins and husband Harry Hitchins, Potomac Park, Cumberland, Md., Sue Carol (Chaney) Phillips and husband Kenneth Phillips, Damascus, Md.; a son, Nile E. "Bob" Chaney and wife Mary Kay (Pollock) Chaney, Knobley View, Ridgeley; granddaughters, Tina Renee (Hitchins) Warnick and husband Russell Warnick, Bowling Green, Cumberland, Kimberly Sue (Phillips) Leggieri and husband Robert, New Market, Md., LaCinda "Cindy" Kay (Chaney) Rudy and husband John, Greencastle, Pa.; grandsons, Martin Dean Hitchins and wife Christina, Potomac Park, Cumberland, Craig Alan Phillips and special friend Erika Rauer, New York, N.Y., Jeffrey Scott Chaney, Knobley Estates, Ridgeley, Gregory Steven Chaney and wife Lisa, Buckingham Road, Cumberland; great-grandchildren, Shala Renee Warnick and special friend Matt Logsdon, Shane Landon Warnick, Justin Dean Warnick, Tori Lynn Leggieri, Andrew Lane Leggieri, Kayla Marie Chaney, Kira Scot Chaney, Samantha Kay Rudy, Tabitha Rae Rudy, Alyssa Mae Rudy, Morgan Noelle Chaney, Jocelyn Nicole Chaney and Jordan Brooke Chaney. She is also survived by half sisters, Sally Hayes, Madge Bradfield and Cathy Batchelor; half brother, Harold Hershberger; stepsister, Elma Allen; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Violet had three very special prayer friends, Margaret Viands, Mary Kaylor and (her loving caretaker) Donna Albright. Also, she had great neighbors she could depend on that kept in contact with her.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, (scarpellifh.com) on Tuesday, April 15, 2008, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday, April 16, 2008, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Thomas F. Gulbronson officiating.

Interment will be in the Fort Ashby Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Martin Hitchins, Craig Phillips, Scott Chaney, Steve Chaney; great-grandsons, Shane Warnick and Justin Warnick, and alternates will be Robert Leggieri, John Rudy and Russell Warnick.

In lieu of flowers, Violet and her family request donations be made to St. Paul's Methodist Church, Patterson Creek, WV or a charity of their choosing.

The family appreciates the thoughts and prayers of so many for Violet and her family. A special thanks to Dr. Robustiano Barrera for the loving and gentle care shown to her.
