Ovens and Murray Advertiser (Beechworth, Vic. : 1855 - 1918), Sat 3 Oct 1908, Page 7.
Death or Mrs. George Hodge.— The
list of old identities of the district, now
fast passing away, has been augmented by
the death on Taesday of Mrs. Bessie
Hodge, relict of the late George Hodge,
aged 64 years, at the Ovens District Hos-
pital, to which she had been admitted
only on the previous day, the cause of
death being general break-up of the
system. In the early years of the Beech-
worth goldfield the husband of the de-
ceased was licensee of the Golden Ball
Hotel, on the Everton-road, In which he
prospered for a time, the road being the
main artery of traffic with Beechworth,
besides being a favorite resort for plea-
sure excursions. The construction of the
railway to Beechworth necesearily diverted
the traffic, and the license was surrendered
many years ago, the old couple retiring
with a competence and residing in Beech-
worth during the latter years of their
earthly existence. The funeral Is ap-
pointed to move from the Ovens District
Hospital for the Beechwortb Cemetery
this (Thursday) afternoon at half-past 3
o'clock, under the direction of Mr. W. J.
Edwards, undertaker.
