Viola Scheurer Aalid, age 92 of Mankato, passed away on June 28, 2014 at Pathstone Memory Care.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at 10:30 a.m., at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the start of the service at the church. Burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Mankato. Funeral arrangements are with Mankato Mortuary.
Viola Scheurer Aalid was born on New Year's Eve in 1921 to John and Sarah Scheurer. She grew up on a farm south of Mankato called the hollyhock farm. She attended SS. Peter and Paul grade school and Catholic Church, and graduated from Loyola High School. Sig and Vi truly valued a Catholic education and put forth the sacrifice and effort to see their children through 12 years of Catholic education. Viola was very proud to be part of the large Scheurer clan and considered herself lucky to have every one of her 13 brothers and sister. She married Sigurd Aalid April 22, 1944. Her sister Vickie described her as a woman who knew what she wanted and was willing to work very hard to get it.
Over the years that inspiring effort was mainly directed at making a wonderful family life for Sig and their six children; Mac Aalid of Ashland, WI, Terry Norris of Kalamazoo, MI, Sarah Krakowski of Plymouth, MN, Charlie Aalid of Waunakee, WI, Mike Aalid of Nicaragua, and Martha Aalid of Escondido, CA. Sig and Viola were also blessed with 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren whom they loved. Vi was a people person and she pulled as many people into her life as she could. She liked to sit on the porch and talk to passers-by. When her children lived at home she liked to visit with their friends before they went out for the evening. She gave haircuts to the boys' friends so that they could save their money. She and Sig enjoyed dinner and dance clubs, bridge clubs, and any excuse to spend time with their many lifelong friends. Her beloved ‘stitch and bitch' group of women met for decades. Later in life, Vi enjoyed meeting friends for coffee after morning Mass, and going golfing with the ‘younger' girls, and playing cards. The bigger the group, the better she liked it. The best time of year was Fall when out-of-town family gathered around the kitchen table for a week of handwork and talk. She and Sig attended St. John's Church for over 60 years and valued their friendships with members there.
Viola had a great zest for life. Why bake 30 cookies when it's just as easy to bake 300 and fill the freezer? And, that ceiling needs painting; I think I can still get up on the ladder. Only she could have turned Sig's 11 years of paralysis into a house party. In her 80's she traveled to Europe to meet Sig's Norwegian relatives and later went to Nicaragua where she insisted on riding the zip line over the rain forest. Even on her relaxed days, she managed to get in a 2 mile speed walk along the Mankato Rail Trail.
Viola lived her life by the admonition: Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might; and now we will miss her mightily.
Viola's family would like to express their gratitude to Pathstone Memory Care and Mayo Health Systems Hospice staff for their loving care of Mom and the family.
