Grand Master of the Order of Teutonic Knights. He succeeded his brother, Konrad von Jungingen in the position, serving from 1407 to 1410. His death on the battlefield at Tannenberg/Grünwald and the subsequent loss of this battle spelled the beginning of the end of the Order's influence. (The battle is famously depicted in the painting by Jan Matejko.) The place of his burial is disputed. Some sources say he was buried at Malbork Castle, as was his brother. He has a cenotaph at Tannenberg, and some believe his remains lie at that battlefield. (Please click on the photos to see the credits.)
