A Life of Activity Led by the Late Silas Brooks of Alexander Valley

Silas Brooks, an old resident of Sonoma Co. and Knights Valley, died at his home on the Maccama on Tuesday of last week. The funeral was held Thursday by E. B. Ware conduction the services, and the remains were interred in the Evergreen Cemetery, Knights Valley, where other relatives have been buried.

The deceased was born in New York City on Dec. 29, 1830. His parents did when he was a child, and when he was 12 years of age he went to sea. he came to California around the Horn in 1850 and lived for a while in Marin Co., but life upon the sea was more alluring than a farming life, and he went back to the ocean for 10 years voyaging to the Artics in whaling business. He then settled in Carson and took part in an Indian War in Nevada. Coming to Sonoma Co., he made his home with his uncle, Tom Knight, after whom Knights Valley was named.

He was married in 1877 to Mrs. Sensibaugh, and four children were born to them: Mrs. Ada Pedigo, of Sebastapol; C. W. Brooks of Quincy, Plumas Co.; and J. M. Brooks and Silas Brooks, of Alexander Valley.

Besides his widow, a sister, Mrs. A. A. Smith is living at Capa, Michigan, and a brother, Horace Brooks, at San Luis Rey, CA.

The deceased was a member of the party which first raised the stars and stripes at Ft. Sonoma. He was a member of the Russian River Rifles, the military organization which flourished in Healdsburg in the days of the Civil war.

The widow and family of the late Silas Brooks desire to return their heart-felt thanks to the many friends who rendered loving attention to them in their hour of affliction.
