Rita M. Zahorik, age 90, a Manitowoc resident, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005 at
North Ridge Medical and Rehabilitation Center, Manitowoc.
Rita was born April 1, 1914 at Pine Grove, daughter of the late Mark and Josephine
(Steinbrecher) Nachtwey. She grew up and was educated in Cooperstown, attended St.
James School and graduated from Denmark High School with the class of 1933. In
1934, she graduated from the LeClair College of Cosmetology in Milwaukee. During
her 50-year career as a cosmetologist, Rita was employed in beauty salons in
Milwaukee, Manitowoc, Reedsville, Monterey, Calif., and Chicago. She owned and
operated Yvonne Beauty Salon in Manitowoc until her retirement. On Nov. 25, 1937,
she married Ernie Zahorik in St. James Catholic Church at Cooperstown. Ernie
preceded her in death Dec. 3, 1995. Rita was a member of Holy Innocents Parish,
the Christian Women of the parish and was a Eucharistic minister. She was past
president and a member of the VFW Otto Oas Post #659 Auxiliary since 1946. She
enjoyed bowling, working in her flower garden and was devoted to her church.
Survivors include special nieces and nephews: Rita (Don) Kohlbeck, Ellen (Gerald)
Christel, Bill (Jane) Wojta and other dear nieces and nephews; two sisters-in-law:
Lucille Nachtwey, Green Bay; and Juanita Zahorik, Reedsville; close friends: Betty
and Fritz Gaedke; close neighbors: Ruth and Charles Indestad and Cindy and David
Pech. In addition to her parents and husband, Ernie, Rita is preceded in death by
three brothers: Roman, Norman and Al Nachtwey; four sisters: Mildred Schuster,
Marie Moyer, Evelyn Wojta and Marion Wagner.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005 at Holy Innocents
Catholic Church, Waldo Boulevard at North 14th Street, Manitowoc. The Rev. Gerald
Foley will officiate with burial of her cremated remains at a later date.
Relatives and friends will gather after 10 a.m. Wednesday to the time of liturgy
at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Roncalli High School would be appreciated.
