Son of Taft and Julian Aldrich, Ambrose Aldrich enlisted in the Army on July 3, 1861 at the age of 28. Prior to that, he was a single farmer residing in the vicinity of Catlin, Vermilion County, Illinois. Muster rolls describe him as 5 foot 8 1/2 inches tall with dark hair, blue eyes, and a light complexion. He began his three-year military career as a private in Co. D of the 35th Illinois Infantry and was promoted to corporal before he died of wounds recieved in action at Pea Ridge, Arkansas. Records vary on his date of death, which is listed as occuring on April 3, 1862; April 6, 1862; or April 13, 1862.
