When Charles' family first arrived in Ohio, they farmed, but that lasted only a short time until the family opened a grocery store in town. That business morphed into a restaurant and, eventually, bar and restaurant. Also, the family purchased the building next door and they went into cigar manufacturing and sales. George William was in charge of the cigar business, but all the children worked at the businesses. In subsequent city directories, Charles was listed as, teamster, bartender, grocery proprietor, and carpenter. The girls worked as waitress. At times, Charles, lived above the restaurant. Charles first married Charlotte Snow, 12 Mar 1896, but the family was not happy with this marriage and it was soon annulled. Almost one year to the day, 13 May 1897, Charles married Eva Bessie Miller. They stayed together for eighteen years and had seven children, all in Toledo, Ohio. On 30 Jun, 1925, while on a walk with a friend, Charles had a heart attack and died.
