The son of John Miller & Catherine C. (Miller) Heiny, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Millersburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 5" tall and had dark hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg February 26, 1864, as a private with Co. B, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa), and honorably discharged with his company July 18, 1865.

He married Drucila E. Reigle in June 1875 and fathered Mary C. (b. 08/01/76 - married a Smith). Drucila died January 1878 in Shamokin, Northumberland County, and he married widow Catherine Fulton, née Lawton, June 8, 1886. In 1890, he lived in Harrisburg, then relocated to Carlisle, but moved to Charles Town, Jefferson County, West Virginia, in 1896. Cause of death is listed as "nephritis."
