Services Held for Karen Vernon

Services were held Friday, Dec. 10, 1982 at the Bethel Lutheran Church, Sutherland in memory of Karen Vernon, 39. Rev. Leroy Riemer officiated. Solist, Mrs. Don Ebel, sang the hymns "Rock of Ages" and "The Old Rugged Cross," accompanied by Mrs. Loren Drefke at the organ. Casket bearers were Vince Austin, Dennis Davis, Peter Degman, Vernon Austin, Marvin Guthridge, and Bill Lyster. Usher was Eddie Jebsen. Committal services were held at Waterman Cemetery, Sutherland.

Karen Kay Vernon, the daughter of James and Evelyn Hintz Austin, was born May 30, 1943 at Sioux Rapids, Ia. She was baptized and confirmed in Bethel Lutheran Church at Sutherland and graduated from Sutherland High School. She attended the St. Joseph School of Nursing in Sioux City and became a Registered Nurse.

She was united in marriage to Gerald Vernon in February of 1965 at Sutherland. They moved to Chicago and she was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church. She lived in Chicago for eighteen years and worked at Swedish Covenant Hospital. She passed away at Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee [misprint: Died at Mercy Hospital, Sioux City, Woodbury, Iowa] on Dec. 6, 1982 at the age of 39 following a long illness.

Preceding her in death were her brother, Kenneth King, and an infant sister, Patricia Austin, and an infant nephew, [Robert] Frederick Preusser.

Left to cherish her memory are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Austin of Sutherland; two children, Gloria and Richard Vernon, both of Chicago; three sisters, Mrs. Peter (Jane) Degman of Chicago, Mrs. Bill (Jenny) Lyster of Albert City, and Sarah Austin of Alton, la., as well as other relatives and friends.
