Richard the son of Marion T. Suerdlik and Joshua Greenspan who pre deceased his son, the dear brother of Fran A. Greenspan of Nutley New Jersey enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on February 24 1965 in New York, NY. He arrived in Vietnam on May 28 1968 where he was assigned for duty and served with Company L, 3d Battalion, 3d Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

In the month of November the Battalion moved to a new assigned area of operations in northern Quang Tri Province. On November 10, elements of the Battalion made a helicopter landing to LZ Comet in a mountainous area where Gio Linh and Cam Lo Districts met. Shortly after the Marines began to deploy, the area was hit with a barrage of NVA 122mm rocket fire resulting in two men being killed by the hostile fire. One of the casualties was PFC Richard Greenspan.
