English caricaturist. He studied at the Royal Academy and visited Europe before setting up work premises in Piccadilly, London. Originally a liberal, he became famous for his caricatures of radical figured such as Richard Price, George James Fox and other public figures of the time, and his body of work eventually numbered about 1200 pictures. He started to go blind and from 1809 was unable to work. This led to a depression which led to his suicide attempt in 1811. He was cared for by his housekeeper until his death. Among his best-known cartoons are A New Way to Pay the National Debt (1796), Social Elements in Skating (1805), and A Rake's Progress at the University (1806).
