Death of A Mysterious Woman

Some four weeks ago Dr. Franklin Burr, said to be from Greeley, came to Mrs. Harris' boarding house, on Olive street, this city, with a woman who he said was an invalid and wished a room. The woman, who said her name was Mrs. Jones, was assigned a room where she remained until her death, Thursday evening, July 12. Dr. Burr, who paid the woman frequent visits, is said to have reported that she died from the effects of peritonitis. The remains were buried by the authorities last Saturday in the Potter's field at Grandview cemetery. Nothing is known here concerning her history, where she came from nor where her relatives and friends are, if she has any living, as she studiously refused to reveal her identity. From something said by Dr. Burr after the woman's death it is believed her name was White but where she belonged no one here seems to know. She was apparently of English birth and about 40 years old. She was well dressed and carried an elegant gold watch and had considerable jewelry and some money. She appeared like a woman of considerable refinement and was ladylike in her appearance and actions.
What gives the affair an air of mystery is that her trunk, on examination, was found to contain nothing that threw any satisfactory light upon her history. A photograph of her attending physician, Dr. Burr, was discovered in an album found in the trunk, but the doctor declared she had stolen it and that he knew nothing about the woman. He afterward admitted, so it is said, that she was a sporting woman whom he had met on the train.
It would seem as if this was a case which demanded a searching investigation to the end that several suspicious circumstances connected with the woman's arrival here and subsequent death might be cleared up and her identity established.
