One of 11 children born to Clinton Samuel Swank and Emma C Arnold. His mother, Emma, passed away when Merle was 10, his sister Maude when he was 11, and brother David died when he was 3, so he was raised by a family of men. Not surprisingly, his favorite pastimes were fishing and baseball, especially the Cincinnati Reds. He died the day after his dream team clinched the 1975 National League Championship Series.
