Roman Catholic Cardinal. Pamplona born, Eustaquio Ilundáin y Esteban received his education at the local seminary and later in that of Ciudad Real, being ordained priest in his native city in 1886. Being soon appointed member of the teaching faculty of local seminary, in 1891 he was named canon of the cathedral chapter of Ciudad Real, and ten years later, rector of the seminary of Segovia. At the early age of forty two, Canon Eustaquio was named bishop of the diocese of Orense, receiving his episcopal consecration in the parish church of San Saturnino in Pamplona on March 13, 1905. Appointed senator of the Spanish Kingdom by the province of Santiago de Compostela, he was promoted to the metropolitan see of Seville on December 16, 1920. Pope Pius XI created him cardinal priest in the consistory of March 30, 1925, receiving the title of San Lorenzo in Panisperna the following December. Receiving a severe shaking when his car crashed into a tree while on his way for a pastoral visit to Bujalance, near the Andalucian border, the Cardinal fell ill with a severe bronchial pneumonia in a fortnight. Confined to his bed in the archiepiscopal palace, he died within a few days.
