Civil War Veteran: Private in Co. C, 31st Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry, Army of the Cumberland. A carpenter and farmer with three little children, he signed up late for the war in Oct. 1864, when men were greatly needed, then served cheerfully in Tennessee and Alabama, coming home without incident. A fine carpenter throughout his life, he worked on the new state capitol in Des Moines. His carpentry skills were certainly passed down to several of his sons and to his grandson, my father David, who could build anything with wood. Note1: 'FLT' on tombstone stands for Friendship, Love & Truth, for membership in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, which took care of widows and orphans and did good works. Note2: Thanks to Mike Camp and Holly Johnson Marquez for family photo and to Clarence Cassler for photos of family plot stones.
