Son Of A Former Premier
The Premier's father, Mr Thomas Playford, died yesterday at Norton Summit, in his 85th year, after an illness lasting several months. The funeral will take place at Norton Summit at 4 pm. today. Mr. Playford leaves a widow, three daughters, and one son (the Premier). Mr. Playford was the eldest son of Mr. Thomas Playford, Premier of South Australia from 1887 to 1889. and from 1890 until 1892 and later a Senator and Federal Minister. He was well known in the fruit industry and was one of the pioneers of the East End Market Co. of which for many years he was a director. He was also a member of the East Torrens District Council. In his youth Mr. Playford worked on the Yalata sheep station, Eyre Peninsula, and in 1890 purchased from Mr. George Greenham the orchard at Norton Summit which has become known throughout the State for the production of high class fruit. The daughters are Miss Adelaide Playford, of Norton Summit; Mrs. A. G. Ducray, of North Norwood; and Mrs. F. A. Galloway, of Waikerie. There are eight grand children.
