Norman Borseth, age 86, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Sunday, February 14, 2010, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 17, 2010, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Marion Pruitt-Jefferson, presiding from the First Lutheran Church in Decorah.

Friends may call from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 16, 2010, at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home and also on Wednesday morning until time of services at the funeral home.

Norman Oscar Borseth was born on May 10, 1923, the son of Carl and Ida (Erickson) Borseth on the family farm in Springfield Township, rural Decorah, Iowa. Norman attended rural country school on Townline Road and then served in the US Army from June 6, 1946 to June 21, 1947 in Japan. He married Dorothy Althouse on February 28, 1954, in Postville, Iowa. Norman farmed in Springfield Township from 1949-67. In 1964, they moved to the farm on Valdres Avenue, until 1985, when they moved into Decorah. Norman then worked as a carpenter at Luther College and for Munkel Construction, later starting his own construction business. Norman married Lillian Peterson Bakken on May 15, 1989, in Colorado. Norman enjoyed playing cards, square dancing and tinkering on projects. He also enjoyed volunteering for Meals on Wheels and helping at the VFW. Norman was a member of the First Lutheran Church and was an active member of the Helof Holm VFW Post #1977.

Norman’s survivors include his daughter: Ann Borseth, Brooklyn Center, MN. One sister: Arla Hirsch, Charles City, IA. Four nephews: David (Roselyn) Lensch, Decorah, IA; John (Muriel) Lensch, Decorah, IA; Scott (Rhonda) Brown, Eau Claire, WI; and Larry (Sandy) Brown, TX.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents: Carl and Ida (Erickson) Borseth. His two sons: Gary Borseth on June 7, 1963 and Wayne Borseth in infancy on May 4, 1960. Two wives: Dorothy Borseth on June 7, 1988 and Lillian Peterson Bakken Borseth on May 28, 2009. One sister: Sadie Lensch. Four brothers: Clifford (Katie) Borseth, Stanley (Margie) Borseth, Merle (Elsie) Borseth and Donald Borseth in infancy. Four brothers-in-law: Harry Lensch, Fay Ward, Melvin Brown and Lester Hirsch
