Ellen (Helen Johanna) McDonald was born about 1838 in either Ireland or Pennsylvania to Roger and Abigail McDonald. Her siblings were David and Catherine. Her parents both died early (and Ellen and her brother David can be found in 1850 (after their parents death) living with the McGetteging family in Philadelphia. Elen J. was 12 and David was 10.

Ellen married Lt. Alexander H. Lovett on July 28, 1855 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Philadelphia, PA by Rev. G.. O'Hara. The witnesses were James Fitzpatrick and Eunice or Unity Gillispie. Their children were:

4 Abigail 1864 (married Louis Dorsheimer, brother of Alex's 2nd wife) and possibly named after Ellen's mother

1860 Ward 9, Philadelphia, PA, living with his parents and others, Alexander 27, born Ireland, and a Hall Keeper. Ellen was 20 and son Charles was 1.

Shortly after this, Alexander joined the Civil War and started his military career. Because of his military service, the family moved around some and had their daughter Abigail in Washington D.C. in 1864 and their daughter Isabella in Virginia. Alexander became involved in the hunt for the Abraham Lincoln Assassins and helped to capture Dr. Samuel Mudd who attended John Wilkes Booth.

1870 Ward 26 in Philadelphia, Alexander age 38 and a Police Officer. Ellen was 31, Charles 11, Alexander 9, Abby 6, Isabelle 4, and Harry age 2.

Ellen Lovett died of Small Pox on January 16, 1872 at age 34. They were living at 2408 Manning St, Philadelphia, PA. She was buried at Cathedral Cemetery on the 17th. It was probably the Old Cathedral as many of their relatives were buried there in this time frame.

After her death, her one child John went to live with her sister Catherine McDonald Faulkner as in the 1880 Philadelphia, PA Census, with Patrick age 56 a Stevadore, Cathrine 50, James 27, ELizabeth 18, Ellen 15, Catherine 14, and John Lovett age 8 a nephew.

Ellen's parents, siblings, and some of her children were buried in her parents "ROGER McDONALD Vault NO. 23 at St. John's Catholic Church Cemetery as below listed:
"Registers of the American Catholic Historical Society of Philadelphia, PA. 1912, page 230," lists the following that are Ellen and Alexander's children and her parents and sibling.
