Barbara Sachsel Farrell, 86, of Garwood, N.J., passed away on Monday, Aug. 11, 2014, after a long battle with cancer.
Friends are invited to visit from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Dooley Funeral Home, 218 North Ave. West in Cranford, N.J. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday at St. Anne's Church, Garwood. Interment will be in Graceland Memorial Park, Kenilworth, N.J.
Born in New York City, "Bobbie" was raised in Garwood. She was the daughter of the late Irene and Rudolph Sachsel.
Bobbie attended the Garwood schools and graduated with high honors from Jonathan Dayton Regional High School in Springfield, N.J.
Although taking a secretarial tract at Dayton, Bobbie was elected student council treasurer as a sophomore, vice-president as a junior, and president as a senior. When the 1946 yearbook was printed no one should have been surprised to see that Barbara Sachsel was selected in the Senior Superlatives as "Most Popular" and "Did Most for School."
She entered the workforce at a high level, being the secretary to the president of the Koppers Coke Company in Westfield, N.J. She became the secretary to the CEO of the Saxon Display Company in New York City.
Eventually, Bobbie returned to her roots in Garwood, where she first became secretary to the principal of the Garwood Schools, and eventually became secretary to the superintendent of schools.
Retiring after 30 years, she became restless and returned to the workforce as the secretary to the minister at the Scotch Plains Baptist Church.
Bobbie was active in St. Anne's Parish, participating on various committees and councils. Until her death she was still bringing food to, and serving, the needy in the surrounding cities.
She was a Eucharistic minister attending to those who could not attend church regularly. No one who ever met and got to know Bobbie could ever forget her smile, laugh, and sincere love of others.
Nothing pleased her more than dancing with her husband, Herb.
Her husband, Herbert Farrell, renowned high school and college wrestler, longtime coach at Cranford High School, and member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, died in 2010.
Bobbie was preceded in death by her brothers, Richard and Arthur, and her sister, Dorothy Valenti.
She is survived by her brother, Gerard, and his wife, Susan, of New Providence, N.J.; four step-children, James Farrell of Clark, N.J., Janis and her husband, Richard Marcone, of Virginia, David and his wife, Judy, of Green Brook, N.J., and Diane and her husband, Tim Kettler, of Cranford. She is survived by loving nieces and nephews including, Richard Valenti of Virginia, Christine Shock of Massachusetts, Anne Valenti of Colorado, Maria Valenti of Massachusetts, Laura Studwell of Westfield, and Daniel Valenti of Iselin, N.J., also Jonathan Sachsel of Massachusetts, Gregory Sachsel of Bernardsville, N.J., and Richard Sachsel of Bedminster, N.J.; and a loving sister-in-law, Leticia Sachsel of California, along with her son, Jeffrey of Maryland.
