Bernice M. Hammond died peacefully at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community on Thursday, August 7, 2014, at the age of 91. She leaves behind her daughters, Mary Ellen (George) Warren of Waterloo and Marcia Hammond of Minneapolis, MN. Devoted grandmother to Melissa Warren (Steve Faga), George “Chip” Warren, Jack Hammond Buchanan, and cherished great-grandson Joshua Warren Faga. Beloved sister Shirley Weiss of Las Vegas, NV and sister-in-law Norma Ingebritson of Albuquerque, NM.

Bernice was born July 2, 1923 in Dows, Iowa to Daniel and Mary Ingebritson. Bernice spent her youth on a farm around the community of Dows, and moved to Geneva, Iowa to complete her High School education. Married to Robert Hammond on July 6, 1941. On March 22, 2014, she lost the love of her life, Bob, after 72 years of marriage.

Bernice started her dental career as an assistant in Hampton, Iowa while Bob served his country in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. She moved to Tacoma, Washington to work and be with him while he served the remainder of his enlistment. They then moved to Iowa Falls, Iowa, to begin a family and career life and on to Waterloo in 1948. Bernice continued her professional career as a dental assistant with Dr.'s Watson, David and Keith Whittemore. She received her formal education through Hawkeye Technical School, retiring in 2010.

Our mom was a tireless professional and volunteer in the community of Waterloo, Iowa. Bernice started volunteering during WWII, rolling bandages for the Red Cross in Hampton. She volunteered at PTA at Edison School and served as president and on Waterloo Council of the PTA. As her daughters were growing she also helped as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she volunteered including serving on the nominating committee of the District of United Methodist Women, chairing the church's rummage sale for more than 25 years, and active in the church circle.

She was a member of PEO chapter FE and served on the Covenant Auxiliary Board for 15 years where she served as treasurer and president. She was a member of the Women's Club since the mid-1960s where she served many roles, including chair of the committee that began the restoration of the Snowden House and was the first president of the Snowden House Foundation. She also served on the Grout Museum Board of Directors. She served in the Red Cross office for 30 years and for the Red Cross motor corps until her husband took over from her. She volunteered for the Promotion Council of Main Street of Waterloo. These activities and more culminated with the honor bestowed to herself and her husband receiving the Leonard Katoski Service Award in April 2005.

Our mom had time left over for fun of dancing, bowling and cooking wonderful family dinners. She will be missed for all she stood for and gave. She lived a very full and fruitful life.

Preceded in death by her husband Robert F. Hammond, her parents, her sisters Evelyn Hanson (Kenneth), Wilma Dotseth (Irv), Miriam Lewis (Roger), her brothers Donald lngebritson (Sondra), Raymond Ingebritson (Bernice), Howard Ingebritson and brother-in-law Lou Weiss.
